Waxing and Hair Removal FAQ

We bleach it, we shave it, we wax it.  Many people have some form or another of unwanted body hair, which prompts us to looking into waxing and hair removal processes.  This list of frequently asked questions is intended to help you make the best decisions about waxing and hair removal.

Should I attempt to wax my own body hair, or should I enlist the help of a professional?

This is usually the first question to be considered, and in some ways, it’s the most important.  Either option has its benefits and drawbacks.  Some of the benefits of waxing and hair removal at home are:
  • Saving money, especially if you plan on waxing your own body hair on a regular basis
  • Reduced travel time
  • You won’t have to be naked (or nearly naked) in front of a stranger
  • Learning how to wax can be fun
  • You get to choose the brand of wax you use
  • You’ll have more control over the waxing process
Taking waxing and hair removal into your own hands can be a rewarding experience, but there are also a number of benefits to utilizing a professional.  The benefits of having an esthetician assist you are:
  • Having a professional remove your body hair often shaves time off of the procedure itself
  • Estheticians are trained in techniques that can reduce your discomfort and healing time
  • If you won’t be waxing regularly, a salon or spa could possibly save you money
  • You won’t have to bend yourself into a pretzel for the hard-to-reach places
  • Estheticians have access to higher quality waxes that are not available to the general public
  • You won’t have to research waxing and hair removal techniques and tools.

What kind of wax should I use?

Using the correct wax can help ensure a better result, and it can make your waxing and hair removal experience more enjoyable.  The key is choosing the correct wax for the area you’re using it on.  There are two main types of wax available to general consumers: hard wax and strip wax.  Strip wax is used where skin is thicker, such as on your legs, your chin, or your arms.  Hard wax is made for any part of the body, but you’ll definitely want to use it on thinner skin, such as on your underarms, around your bikini area, and any part of your body with more sensitive skin.

How should I go about choosing an esthetician?

Check out the ratings of several of your local salons.  If the business is scored well as a whole, then they are probably hiring quality people.  If you’ve never been to the salon you choose, go in to schedule your waxing and hair removal services rather than calling.  This will give you a chance to get a feel for their professionalism.  Make sure the premises isn’t dirty, that their stations are well-organized, and that they display the credentials of their employees.

I have a cut in the area I'm having hair removed. Can I have the service anyway?

No.  If you notice any cuts or bruises in the area you’re planning on having waxing and hair removal done, you must wait to proceed until you’re fully healed.  If you wax over injuries, you run the risk of injuring yourself further.

Are there any health concerns that I should be aware of?

Yes.  People with certain health conditions, such as diabetes, skin disorders, or blood clotting issues should check with their doctor before attempting waxing and hair removal procedures.

There are many points to consider when deciding how to go about waxing and hair removal. The best thing you can do for yourself is to know up front what your priorities and goals are, then work from there.
