Sugaring Hair Removal FAQ

Sugaring hair removal is one of the oldest methods used for removing unwanted hair. The practice dates back to Ancient Egypt where a smooth, hairless body was considered the standard of youthful, innocent beauty. Although sugaring hair removal is often associated with women’s personal hygiene, it was actually a man who inspired both men and women of Ancient Greece and Rome to get rid of body hairs. Alexander the Great himself encouraged shaving as part of his army’s defensive strategy to prevent enemies from getting a hold of his soldiers during battles. Sugaring hair removal remains a popular method of getting rid of unwanted hair for the face and body. Learn more about what it is, how it is done and why it is a preferred method of epilation.

What is sugaring?

Sugaring, sometimes called Persian waxing, is a hair removal method that uses a mixture of sugar, water and lemon juice to remove hair. The sugaring wax is highly viscous and sticky, making it effective in pulling hair by the roots. It may be spread onto the skin using the fingers, a flat object or a spatula. To remove the hair, the wax is pulled quickly against the growth of the hair follicles. The procedure is quick and requires very minimal cleanup after.

Are there artificial additives or chemicals used for making sugaring wax?

Sugaring hair removal is an all-natural method that uses food-based ingredients, mainly sugar, water and lemon juice. In some formulations, cornstarch, molasses or honey may also be added. When heated, the mixture forms a sticky paste that does not require the use of chemicals or additives to improve or increase its viscosity. The acidity of lemon juice breaks down the sucrose in the sugar, thus preventing the formation of crystals and making the mixture pliable and sticky. If prepared and used under hygienic conditions, sugar wax is very safe. Because it only uses natural ingredients, it does not leave a residue on the skin and is not likely to cause an allergic reaction such as itching, burning or rashes. It is so safe that the sugar wax itself is actually safe to eat.

On which parts of the body can sugaring hair removal work best?

Sugaring  hair removal products are very versatile because they can be used on virtually any part of the face and body. They work remarkably well for the eyebrows, upper lip, chin, chest, arms, underarms, legs, thighs and bikini area. These products can be used by men and women.

What makes sugaring hair removal different from other methods?

For one, sugaring hair removal uses natural ingredients that are not known to cause adverse side effects. The method is also known to be relatively gentle because the sugar wax adheres only to the hair and not the skin.

Does sugaring wax require heating before application?

Some formulations used in sugaring hair removal, such as those that are labeled “cold” sugar waxes do not require heat and may be applied directly onto the skin. Some products, however, need to be warmed in order to make them more pliable and easy to spread over the skin.

Are there precautions I should take when using sugaring wax?

Sugaring hair removal is generally safe but care should be taken when heating the wax to prevent burns. Hair removal should also be performed using clean hands and tools to prevent contamination. The product should also be stored in a cool, dry place in a tightly capped container to preserve its quality.
